“The Clinton Health Plan (1994), the Affordable Care Act, GOP Politics, and Chief Justice Roberts”

By STEVEN JONAS MD, MPH - 07.30.15

At about the time that the Clinton Health Plan was introduced to the Congress in the fall of 1993, through the American Public Health Association I was recruited to be a “Designated Speaker for the Clinton Health Plan.”  Of course, as a left-winger I had been a “Single-Payer” supporter for many years.  Some of my friends and colleagues on the health care field were outraged that I would do such a thing.  But my position was a simple one.  While the CHP was highly complex and hardly perfect, the intent of the Act was to get most U.S. covered by some kind of health insurance in a fairly highly regulated system.  A simple, government-run, single-payer system, it wasn’t, but: for millions of U.S. citizens it was far better than what they had (too often, nothing).

“The Charleston Massacre, the Confederate Battle Flag, and the Coming Second Civil War”

By STEVEN JONAS MD, MPH  - June 25, 2015

The Charleston Massacre means many things.  Most importantly it means that the Doctrine of White Supremacy that drove the Institution of Slavery, and drove what became the Confederate States of America to secession from the Union, is still alive and quite well, in the citizenry at large.  (The seemingly increasing succession of white cop/black victim murders of course has been raising the poisonous topic in the public consciousness in the past year or two; see my column “Ferguson Worked as Intended.”)  But now here it is, writ large, in the person of a violent, young, openly and proudly defiant, white supremacist.  Interestingly enough, Roof not only reflects the sentiments of the native US white supremacy movement, but of its international relatives as well.  (The Southern Poverty Law Center is a very important source of information of right-wing hate/potential terror organizations in the United States.)

Iran, “The Bomb,” and “The Deal”

By Steven Jonas, MD MPH - 06.14.15

Ah yes, “the Iran Deal,” which isn’t actually a deal yet, but rather an apparently very detailed framework for one.  David Stockman of all people has provided one of the more lucid and detailed descriptions of the “framework” that I have seen.  (Remember Stockman?  He was one of Reagan’s hatchet men who himself eventually got “taken to the woodshed” in Reagan’s quaint terminology for daring to think that the laughable “Laffer curve might not be so funny.  He is now a man of further changed politics.)   Stockman also explains why the deal is nothing like “Munich.”

Ted Cruz, Meet Jefferson Davis Hague

By STEVEN JONAS MD, MPH - 04.30.15

TED CRUZ (courtesy of Patrice Greanville, Editor/Publisher of The Greanville Post and Publisher, Punto Press):  “An opportunistic buffoon, nonetheless typical of an American politician, who need exhibit neither intelligence, genuine morality, nor respect for peace or social justice—merely cunning, and a desire to do the bidding of the superrich that owns them.”

In 1996 I published a book which in its third release (2013) is entitled The 15% Solution: How the Republican Religious Right Took Control of the U.S., 1981-2022.  The style is what I call “fictional non-fiction,” for it is a fictional history of the United States from the time of the election of Ronald Regan as President to the year 2022, written in the style of a history book and

Likud, Netanyahu, and the Ruling Class Interests in Israel

By Steven Jonas, MD, MPH - 03.26.15

As is well-known, coming from behind, in Israeli terms from way behind “Bibi” Netanyahu has won another term as Prime Minister.  How did he do this?  By being honest.  Although he has in the past said that he was in favor of the “Two-State Solution” in principle, as is again well-known, at the end of the election campaign, he said that as long as he is Prime Minister there will be no Palestinian state, on any terms.  While this clearly has been his position for quite some time, this was the first time he said it in public.  Then, once again as is well-known, he came out with his racist statements regarding Arab-Israeli citizen voters and voting. This had all been proceeded in the final two weeks leading up to the election by a massive scare campaign, about “the Palestinians” and about “Iranian nukes.”

THE TRAGEDY OF SELMA

By STEVEN JONAS MD, MPH - February 26, 2015

The “Tragedy of Selma?” you might ask.  Wasn’t it a triumph for the civil rights movement?  Did it not lead to further advances in that struggle?  And if you are referring to the movie, is it not a triumph as well, getting a film that portrays one of the signal struggles of the Movement during the 60s with such searing honesty, no holds barred in dealing with the “Which side are you on?” question, applied to this event?  Well, yes, the Selma March was a triumph for the civil rights movement.  It played a very important role in getting/helping Lyndon Johnson to support what became the Voting Rights Act.
